What is meant by "Everyone Else Does It!"

There was a time where I used the phrase "Everyone else does it". I was 10 years and I heard my first swear word. I thought that it was OK to say that word so I used it a lot. Later on my parents heard me say the bad word and they got mad at me. Thats when I used the phrase "Everyone else does it" and they were still mad at me. So they sent me to my room and made me wash my mouth out with soap.

  1. What did washing your mouth out with soap do? I am wondering about the rest of the story. I mean did you continue to use the word, or did you change your behavior. Although your parents were mad when you used the excuse that "everyone else does it" what was their reaction other than being mad? When that happened to my brother as a child, he never wanted to taste soap again so he did change his words. How did that affect you?

  2. This reminds me of something similar that I did but when I was younger. Personally, I learned that saying bad words are inappropriate.

  4. I had a similar experience with a bad word. I remember being so confused because my uncle had just said it and I repeated it, but I got in trouble with both parents. It was a very confusing time.

  5. I think we all use that phrase when we get in trouble. I also think now that it is not okay because not everyone makes good decisions so why make bad decisions because others do as well.

  6. I agree that many people use this term. I think some people just use this as an excuse for something they know they shouldn't have done but do it anyway.
